1965 Basketball Team Reunion and Celebration

The Narrowsburg boys basketball team of 1964-65 won the first Section 9 Class D championship in school history. This magical season created an atmosphere of excitement and pride for the entire community, and not just the school. Home games saw the gym packed to capacity, with some spectators standing in the hallways, trying to get a peek at the action. Students clamored for seats on the “fan bus”, and fans followed the team to away games, especially arch rivals Jeff-Youngsville. The sectional championship game between the two teams was played before 1200 fans at Liberty High School, where a reported 300 spectators were turned away because the gym had reached legal capacity. Narrowsburg and Jeff faced off for the fourth time that season, the teams having split the two regular-season games, and Jeff edging Narrowsburg 68-67 to claim the Western Sullivan League title. In the season opener at Jeff, the Trojans squeaked by the Indians, 65-64. Narrowsburg won the regular season game at home, 98-93, setting a New York State record for combined points (191) in a game. In the sectional semifinals, Jeff topped Florida, and Narrowsburg overwhelmed Tuxedo, 114-64, establishing another state record with its 114 points, setting up a fourth game between Narrowsburg and Jeff for the sectional title.

The Section 9 Championship game was just like the previous three games between the teams, a seesaw battle that saw Narrowsburg take the title with a 73-70 victory with a free throw by Don Vannatta and a rebound and basket by Jerry Allen in the final minute breaking a 70-70 tie, setting off a wild celebration of players and fans. Those who were a part of that game, from players to team managers, cheerleaders and fans, will never forget that night, 60 years ago.

A celebration of the team and the season will be held at the Narrowsburg Union on Sunday, October 12, and all are welcome. A reception will take place in the Cafe from 11-12, with a program taking place in the Auditorium (Gym) at noon. At least five players and six cheerleaders from that season will be in attendance, and several others will be represented by family members.

In addition to a celebration of the team’s success, special recognition will be offered for the 11 members of the team who served our country in the military. Those serving in the Army were Jerry Allen (deceased), Tom Barnes, Terry Foster, Mo Denny, Don Vannatta and Dan Johnson (deceased). Serving in the Navy were Bob Orsini and John Vannatta. Serving in the Air Force were Hy Brock, Kirby Tyler and Tom Jay (deceased).

In the team photo, kneeling are Howie Umnik, Coach Ron Scheuren, Hy Brock and Kirby Tyler. Standing are John Vannatta, Bob Orsini, Don Vannatta, Dan Johnson, Mo Denny, Terry Foster, Jerry Allen, Tom Barnes, Tom Jay and Rus Barnes.

Please join us on Sunday, October 12 at the Narrowsburg Union with a reception at 11 AM, and program at noon.

Big Eddy Film Festival: ‘Be Like A Tree’ Video Installation by Moh Azima

This installation will be on view in the Narrowsburg Union’s Union Digital Gallery for the entirety of the festival.

Be Like a Tree is a video work that uses technology as a subtle tool for transformation and reflection. Participants are filmed reciting the same short Rumi poem — “Be like a tree and let the dead leaves drop.” Each face and voice, captured in intimate close-up, becomes part of a growing digital chorus.

With the help of machine learning, facial features and vocal textures are gently blended into a continuously evolving composite. Spanning time, the individual gradually gives way to the collective: one face made of many, one voice echoing with multitudes. The result is a meditative reflection on unity, identity, impermanence, and the quiet beauty of letting go.

Moh Azima is a filmmaker and artist working at the intersection of narrative, portraiture, and emerging technology. His work explores transformation, memory, and the porous boundaries of identity.
