Where I Live
"No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he's not the same man."- Heraclitus Born: c. 535 BC; Ephesus, Ionia.
“Where l Live” is an expression of land and water. It is where I come alive.
For years I've been entranced by our stream and waterfalls, yet I've been reluctant to say, "I own these waters.” A close friend recently suggested that the stream - its currents, rocks, icicles, bubbles, waterfalls, and reflections - owns me.
I'm hers.
When I first started tromping our woods with a camera, images of the stream drew my eyes to the actual and readily observable world. Over time, however, my photographs and videos deepened. I no longer felt strictly confined by plain observation. A bridge began to extend from objectivity to free-form abstraction. Everywhere I saw metaphysical expressions of pure energy. I became an active participant, and this is how where I live became “Where I Live.”
Time plays a critical element in this installation. The video on the large screen was filmed at 120 frames per second - 5x slower than our normal vision. An undeniable departure occurs when we watch life in slow motion. The suspension of normal flow offers an ‘aha’ moment witnessing a different dimension to life.
Vertical images on the right-side wall were captured with an iPhone 13 Pro Max. A slow shutter speed captured water moving in improbable shapes. The thin profile of the iPhone gave me the freedom to create hyperbolic images of the liquid and the frozen world.
“Where I Live” is an invitation to share my space and time, and the flow that informs my imagination.
